I have developed my own breast milk system that works seamlessly among the caregivers for my baby. It is especially helpful when i’m super tired and can’t be certain what happened when! I have an additional post on how to use your own Eco-friendly, reusable, home made, breast milk system labels.
Here is what you will need:
-label maker and 29 rubber bands (large enough to fit around baby’s bottles)
How to make the reusable bottle labels:
-Print out labels for the following titles with 6 spaces in between each duplicate word. For example, type “fridge fridge” with 6 spaces in between each word fridge. Then cut the label, peel the backing off, and fold over the rubber band in the middle so that the label reads “fridge” on both sides of what now appears to be a flag around your rubber band. Repeat the process for all of these words. Type into your label maker as listed below and cut:

I have developed my own breast milk system that works seamlessly among the caregivers for my baby. I have an additional post on how to make your own Eco-friendly, reusable, home made, breast milk system labels.
Here is how it works:
-first pump of the day gets put into a baby bottle, labeled with the day of the week (ie, “mon”), and put in refrigerator. remaining pumps of the day go in the refrigerator with no label, behind the first pump with the label. do this daily. every bottle in between the bottles labeled “mon” and “tue” are known to have been pumped on monday. on wednesday night, freeze any bottles remaining in front of ”tue” (be sure to use monday’s date)
-if supply is low, or if approaching 3 months from date expressed (pumped), take milk out of the freezer, put in fridge or on counter. it will take about 1-2 days to thaw to fridge temp, or about 6-8 hours to get to room temp. label with day of week for fridge, or thawed time for counter.
-when taking bottle out of fridge, note the time and use two labels (one for hour, and one for minutes). breast milk is good for up to 8 hours. ie, you take milk out at 2:22 am, label the milk with the “2″ and the “:15″ and everyone knows that the milk came out at 2:15 am and is good until 10:15am!
-after bottle is empty, remove rubber band for re-use, wash and sterilize bottle.
-tip: remember to tell your caregivers that the bottles are labeled according to where (or when) the milk is FROM.
-tip: each milk can only be in either the fridge or freezer ONE time.

How long is BREAST MILK good (NOTE: this is not for formula!)
-3 months in a freezer that is attached to fridge (6 months in a stand alone freezer), 2 weeks in a freezer compartment within a fridge
-3 days in the refrigerator
- 8 hours at room temperature (it can be frozen if left out at room temperature; i just write on the freezer bag “-4 hours” if it was left out for 4 hours so that i know when i take it out to use that it may only have 4 hours of room temp remaining). BUT IF HEATED, IT IS ONLY GOOD FOR ONE HOUR. so, my advice is: don’t heat the milk. when baby has finished a bottle, i just take the next one out to get to room temperature, unless baby likes the milk cold (even better!) keep in mind for babies younger than 9 or 10 months, cold milk with probably be harder to digest and will most likely make them more gassy.
